An urban renewal and retrofitting program initiated by the Government of India, Smart Cities Mission, also referred to as Smart City Mission, operates with the objective to develop 100 citizen-friendly and sustainable smart cities across India. The Union Ministry of Urban Development is engaged in fulfilling the objective, in collaboration with the State governments of the respective cities.

With an aim to optimize the efficiency of city operations & services and connect to citizens, the Smart City concept uses an integration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and various physical devices connected to the IoT network.

The Smart City Mission Logo is a depiction of a colourful butterfly that is drawn using building blocks. The tagline “MISSION TRANSFORM-NATION”   reflects the objective.
