Recognised as the backbone of the country’s communication, India Post has played a key role in socio-economic development. Apart from delivering postal mails/ letters, India Post has also introduced schemes such as Small Savings Schemes, providing life insurance cover under Postal Life Insurance (PLI) and Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) and providing retail services like bill collection, sale of forms, etc. These initiatives have proved to be beneficial for a large number of people belonging to different communities, creeds or castes.

With more than 1,55,531 Post Offices, the Department of Post (DoP) has the most widely distributed postal network in the world. Uniform postage rates were introduced by Dalhousie, and the India Post Office Act 1854 was passed. This significantly improved upon Lord William Bentinck’s 1837 Act, which had introduced Post Offices in India.
