Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of jewellery items and articles. The BIS Hallmarking Scheme has been aligned with the international criteria of hallmarking. The BIS certified jewellers can get their jewellery hallmarked from any of the BIS recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centres. The principle objective of the Hallmarking Scheme is to protect the public against adulteration and to obligate manufacturers to maintain legal standards of fineness.

Departing from the use of text alone, the BIS Hallmark is a Brandmark Logo type that uses graphic elements alongwith typography. The Logo has a Sanskrit proverb मानक: पथप्रदर्शक: written in Devanagari script which means standard guide.
