Formerly known as Gas Authority of India Ltd, Gail (India) Limited (GAIL) was incorporated in August 1984 as a Central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG). The organisation has a vast area of work ranging from natural gas, liquid hydrocarbon, liquefied petroleum gas transmission, petrochemical, city gas distribution, exploration, and production, to GAILTEL and electricity generation. GAIL was honoured with the Maharatna status on 01st  February 2013 by the Government of India.

The logo of GAIL comprises of the initial letters of GAIL i.e., “G”, alongwith“गेल” written using Devanagari script at the top and GAIL in English written at the bottom. The Logo has been designed using the shades of red, yellow and black.
