An apex body of the Government of India, the Ministry of Women & Child Development works with the mandate of formulation and administration of rules and regulations and laws related to women and child development in India. Earlier, it was a Department operational under the Ministry of Human Resources Development and the Department of Women & Child Development came into existence, as a separate Ministry, from 30th January 2006. Aiming at the creation of gender equitable and child-centred policies and programmes, the Ministry has been extensively engaged in devising strategies for empowering women by ensuring an environment free from violence & discrimination as well as for nurturing of children by creating growth opportunities in a safe environment.

The Ministry Logo has two icons representing a woman and a child who have open arms, which is a depiction of embracing change and growth. The Logo has a tagline – “Towards a new dawn”, which shows development to a new stage. The Ministry name is given at the bottom.
